General Fund is viewed as capital for an organisation. The General Fund is of paramount importance as it provides financial relief in times of distress. Building of a General Fund is helps ensure smooth sustenance of an organization. Like capital, it is meant to be dipped into when the operations of the organization are in deficit i.e. in years where expenditure exceeds income. A good corpus is estimated at 6-12 months’ expenditure, to provide an NGO with enough of a financial cushion. If a sizeable corpus exists, the core activities of the organization can still continue in periods when grants and external help are not available. A separate bank account for general funds need not be created.  General Fund donations are an important source of money to NGOs as it helps them meet expenses critical to their work and helps them support various projects undertaken by them.
